the birth of the foundation

With Maria Lai's donation of about one hundred works of art--some of the most important and significant in her artistic journey and which have profoundly marked the twentieth century contemporary art--a cultural project was started in Ulassai. It is the natural continuation of a vocation in the field of contemporary art that the town of Ulassai has been cultivating for over twenty years. The fundamental break from this vocation was the extraordinary 1981 "Join the Mountain" in which all the houses in town and in the surrounding mountains, inspired by an ancient local legend, were linked together with a sky blue ribbon, over ten kilometers long. In the years following this initial project, many others set up the town of Ulassai as a true open-air museum of contemporary art.

a one of a kind museum

Management has been entrusted to the Foundation "Stazione dell’ Arte" which cares for the permanent museum of the works of Maria Lai and especially the entire activity in the building, in specially-designed exhibition spaces and laboratories. Planning for expansion has already begun. The numerous works donated by the Ulassai artist will not be exhibited all at the same time. However, based on particular motifs and thematic threads specified over time, they will be made available to the public in different exhibitions throughout the year, creating not a defined and closed museum space in a fixed and immovable exhibition, but an ongoing, ever-growing and evolving situation.
